Ostrava 2022Invited competition 1st place - Incorporation of a new reception element into the valuable modernist interior of the New Town Hall / City Hall of Ostrava from 1930. The proposal to supplement the existing hall space of the main entrance to the extensive City Hall complex with a reception element (control and information point) is fundamentally influenced by the monumental and strictly symmetrical character of the place. The most natural solution - placing the reception in the main axis - would be compositionally correct, but it would create an operational and aesthetic obstacle in the center of the hall. Therefore, the proposal consists of two elements - a reception desk and an island upholstered bench. Both elements are placed in the side wings of the central hall. The balanced composition is thus optimal from an architectural-compositional and user perspective. The new element is not dominant, the hall interior remains a free communication and gathering space, complemented by new furniture placed "aside" from the main axes. Materially and in detail, the furniture respects traditional stone (travertine), with high-gloss veneer and brass accents. The front walls of both wings are used for audio-video presentations of the office.
